The journey means more than the trophy: Messi's emotional message ahead of WC final
With just hours remaining before Argentina's FIFA World Cup (WC) final against Spain, captain Lionel Messi has delivered an emotional message to his teammates, saying the team's greatest accomplishment extends far beyond winning the trophy.
On the eve of the final in New Jersey, Messi shared a group photo on Instagram featuring the entire Argentine contingent. Standing alongside head coach Lionel Scaloni, the image included players, coaching staff, medical personnel, kit managers, cooks and Argentine Football Association (AFA) president Claudio Tapia. It was the squad's final team photo before heading into the biggest match of the tournament.
Set to play in the third World Cup final of his illustrious career, Messi reflected on the bond the team has built throughout the campaign.
"The greatest achievement over all these years isn't just the title—it's the journey itself. Living every day with this group, fighting together, overcoming difficult moments and enjoying every step of the way has been the most valuable experience," Messi wrote.
The Argentine captain also expressed gratitude to everyone behind the team's success.
"To every teammate, every member of the coaching staff and everyone who works tirelessly every day to keep this team together like a family—thank you. Whatever happens tomorrow, this team has already written a chapter in history that none of us will ever forget and no one can erase. Vamos, Argentina!"
Meanwhile, head coach Lionel Scaloni is still weighing his final selection ahead of the title clash. Argentina could make one change from the side that defeated England in the semi-finals, with Rodrigo De Paul in contention to replace Giuliano Simeone in midfield.
Scaloni is also yet to make a final decision at right-back, where Nahuel Molina and Gonzalo Montiel remain in competition for a starting spot. Apart from those possible adjustments, the rest of the lineup is expected to remain unchanged.
Argentina will take the field aiming to secure a record-extending third World Cup title and become back-to-back world champions. Ahead of the decisive showdown, Messi's heartfelt message has reminded the football world that, regardless of the final result, this team's journey has already earned a lasting place in World Cup history.
