The opponent even Messi fears facing in World Cup
With less than four months to go until the World Cup, defending champions Argentina are preparing to retain their title. But amid the final preparations, captain Lionel Messi has openly spoken about one potential opponent he would rather avoid—Mexico.
In a candid conversation with former Argentina teammate and Tigres goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman on the 'Miro de Atras' podcast, the 38-year-old reflected on their 2-0 group-stage win over Mexico in the 2022 World Cup.
Messi admitted Argentina approached that match with palpable fear, knowing defeat would mean early elimination. "We honestly went into that game with fear," he said. Despite having the historical advantage, Messi considers Mexico a consistently tough opponent capable of testing even the strongest teams with their ball possession, control and tactical discipline.
Looking ahead to 2026, co-hosted by the US, Mexico and Canada, Messi noted home advantage will make facing Mexico even more difficult. "Playing at home has an impact, for better or worse," he said, expressing hope they avoid an early meeting.
Argentina are drawn in Group J with Austria, Algeria and Jordan, while Mexico are in Group A.
