Three media outlets joining legal fight against Trump administration

Three big news media of the country CNN, MS Now and Politico are going to the door of the court against the ban of US President Donald Trump. These media have announced filing a case against the Trump administration on Monday demanding the restoration of the access of journalists to the White House and the protection of the constitutional rights of the media.

It has been said in the joint statement of the three news media that the case is being filed on the allegation of violation of the freedom of the media protected in the First Amendment of the constitution of the United States. An application will be made at the Federal District Court of Washington DC seeking an emergency order for the quick withdrawal of the ban imposed on the entry of journalists into the White House.

Earlier on Friday Trump announced the ban of CNN, MS Now and Politico at the White House on social media Truth Social. He alleged that these news media are publishing ‘fake news’ regarding his administration and the United States. At the same time the US President also indicated taking the same type of steps against several more news media.

After the announcement of Trump the journalists of the three media were obstructed when they went to enter the White House on Saturday. The press identity cards of the concerned journalists were made ineffective and several were asked to submit the identity cards to the Secret Service. Due to this the media have informed that the ban has been effectively implemented.

In the preparation of the case the three news media have said that no notice or proper process was followed before cancelling the identity cards of their journalists. Their allegation is that the access of the journalists has been taken away due to the objection of the government over the type of publishing news. They will seek immediate intervention against this decision and the restoration of the access from the court.

Earlier the legal dispute with the Trump administration over the access of the media has reached up to the court. In 2018 the court had ordered the restoration after the press card of CNN journalist Jim Acosta was withdrawn. In 2025 also a legal fight took place with the administration over the access of the Associated Press to the White House.

In this new case the court will face questions regarding the freedom of the media, the access of journalists to government buildings and the constitutional limit of taking measures against any media from the side of the government due to publishing news. The three media have informed that their goal is not only to bring back their own access, but also to establish through the court this principle that the government cannot determine what the media will publish.
