Three nations, one global celebration: FIFA World Cup 2026 set to kick off today
The FIFA World Cup 2026, widely regarded as “The Greatest Show on Earth,” begins today (June 11), ushering in a new era for international football with the largest tournament in the competition’s history.
For the first time ever, the World Cup will feature 48 teams and be jointly hosted by Mexico, the United States and Canada, marking an unprecedented expansion in both scale and ambition. Beyond the increased number of participants, the tournament promises a groundbreaking blend of football, entertainment and technology, making it the most expansive World Cup ever staged.
A Historic Opening Across Three Nations
The tournament officially gets underway tonight at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City—renamed Mexico City Stadium by FIFA for the event—where hosts Mexico face South Africa in the opening match.
Before kickoff, football fans around the world will witness what organisers describe as the most ambitious opening celebration in World Cup history. Unlike previous editions, all three host nations will stage separate opening ceremonies ahead of their respective first matches, showcasing their cultures, music and national identities on the global stage.
Mexico Opens the Show
Mexico's ceremony, scheduled approximately 90 minutes before the opening match, will be headlined by global pop sensation Shakira and African music star Burna Boy, who will perform the tournament’s official anthem, “Dai Dai.”
A star-studded lineup including Maná, Alejandro Fernández, J Balvin, Belinda, Danny Ocean, Lila Downs, Los Ángeles Azules and Tyla will also take the stage.
Organisers say the ceremony will celebrate Mexico’s rich heritage, from the ancient Aztec civilization to the country’s modern cultural diversity, through a combination of dance, lighting effects and cutting-edge digital visuals.
Canada Showcases Multicultural Identity
Canada will launch its World Cup journey on Friday in Toronto, where hosts Canada face Bosnia. Ahead of the match, a vibrant opening ceremony will highlight the country’s multicultural character.
The event will feature performances by Canadian stars Michael Bublé, Alessia Cara, Alanis Morissette and Jessie Reyez.
Joining them will be internationally acclaimed dancer and actress Nora Fatehi, along with several other artists representing Canada’s diverse cultural landscape.
The ceremony will also pay tribute to Indigenous communities and showcase Canada’s social and cultural inclusivity through music, storytelling and visual presentations.
Hollywood Flair in the United States
The United States will host its opening celebration at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles before its first match against Paraguay.
Global pop star Katy Perry and rapper Future will headline the event, while performers including Anitta, Lisa, Rema and Tyla are also expected to appear.
Organizers have promised a spectacular production featuring advanced laser technology, drone displays and immersive 3D visual effects, bringing a distinctly Hollywood-style flair to the global football festival.
Football Meets Entertainment
According to FIFA, each opening ceremony has been designed to combine football with culture, technology and entertainment while reflecting the unique identity of the host nation.
The creative direction of all three ceremonies has been led by renowned Italian producer Marco Balich and his company, Balich Wonder Studio. Balich previously worked on multiple Olympic opening and closing ceremonies and is expected to bring the same level of grandeur to football’s biggest stage.
A New Era Begins
The 2026 tournament represents the most significant transformation in World Cup history. With 48 teams, 104 matches and three host nations, FIFA aims to expand football’s global reach and create opportunities for more nations to compete on the sport’s biggest platform.
As the opening whistle approaches, the eyes of billions will not only be fixed on the action on the pitch but also on a worldwide celebration of culture, music and sport. The FIFA World Cup 2026 is set to begin not merely as a football tournament, but as a global festival unlike any seen before.
