Three of same family killed as bus hits motorcycle in Barishal

Three members of the same family have been killed after a speeding bus hit a stationary motorcycle on the roadside in Barishal. The incident occurred around 12:30 pm on Tuesday, May 26, in the Batajor area of Gournadi upazila.

The deceased have been identified as Firuz Mahmud, 37, his wife Monia Begum, and their infant daughter Jannat. They were residents of Uzirpur upazila sadar.

Local residents said the motorcycle was stopped on the roadside due to traffic congestion when a speeding bus of Taj Ananda Paribahan, heading towards Barishal, crashed into it. All three riders died on the spot.

Angry locals vandalised the bus after the accident, but the driver and helper fled. Traffic was halted on the highway for two hours, causing a long traffic jam. Highway police are working to clear the congestion.

Gournadi Fire Service Station Officer Md Mizanur Rahman said Firuz Mahmud was the son of Abdul Hakim of Uzirpur. It is believed he was returning home from Dhaka with his family on the motorcycle.

Gournadi Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Mohsin said the bus involved in the accident has been seized. Police are working to normalise the situation and resolve the traffic jam.
