Transparency International Bangladesh has issued a statement explaining its position following discussions in parliament, remarks by the home minister and reactions from police authorities regarding its report on the first 100 days of the post-13th National Parliamentary Election government.

In a press release on Tuesday, June 9, TIB said it views the reactions from various quarters positively and believes these discussions will help make good governance and anti-corruption efforts more effective.

TIB noted that the home minister correctly stated that the organisation is not an investigative body but a research-based institution that works on good governance and anti-corruption policy reforms.

The organisation said its research follows social science-based national and international standards. Data is collected from various government, private and human rights organisation sources and is verified and analysed in multiple stages.

TIB also stated that the report clearly mentioned the use of data from Bangladesh Police and three human rights organisations regarding law and order information. Therefore, the claim that the report was based solely on newspaper clippings is not accurate.

On the role of media, TIB questioned that since information from media is used even at policy-making levels, it cannot be completely disregarded.

Regarding police reactions, TIB said there was no direct disagreement with their main observations on the law and order situation. However, comparative analysis with different past periods was beyond the scope of the research, so comments on that matter are not applicable.

TIB also said it believes efforts are being made to divert attention from the main issue by misrepresenting their research.
