TMC will return to power very soon: Mamata Banerjee

Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee has said that her party will return to power in West Bengal “very soon,” signalling an aggressive political push against the BJP government just four months after losing the state Assembly election.

She made the remarks at a foundation-day programme of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad in Kolkata on Friday (August 28).

“Do not worry. The BJP’s own people will answer the BJP. Very soon, the Trinamool Congress will return to power,” she told party supporters, projecting confidence in the TMC’s prospects of making a political comeback.

Her remarks came amid growing divisions within the TMC. While the Mamata Banerjee-Abhishek Banerjee camp held its programme on Cathedral Road, a rival faction led by West Bengal Assembly Opposition Leader Ritabrata Banerjee organised a separate event on Rani Rashmoni Avenue.

The Calcutta High Court has allowed Ritabrata Banerjee to continue as Leader of the Opposition for the time being.

Mamata also accused police of blocking TMC meetings and rallies, saying the party would seek “permission from the people” and continue its programmes if official clearance was denied.

Abhishek Banerjee, meanwhile, targeted party dissidents who had left the TMC, saying those who deserted the party would not be welcomed back.

The TMC leadership also stepped up its criticism of the BJP government, accusing it of political repression. Mamata has separately alleged irregularities in the recent Assembly election process, while the party continues to challenge aspects of the election and voter-list revision exercise.
