Tragic boat capsizing in Congo claims at least 25 lives
At least 25 people have died in a boat capsizing incident on a river in the western part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Several others are still missing, according to news Anadolu Ajansi.
Local media reports say the capsized boat was carrying football players from Ngambomi village. The players were returning after a match in Mushie city. The boat set off from Mushie port at 11 pm local time.
The report further states that after traveling 12 kilometers, the boat carrying the football players capsized in the Kwa River near the western province of Mai-Ndombe. At least 25 people have died, and several others are missing in the incident.
Mushie Police Station has also confirmed the incident, but they were unable to provide further details.
Provincial government spokesperson Alexis Mputu stated that the initial count of the deceased is 25, while 30 survivors have been rescued.
"The operation of the vessel during the night is believed to be the primary cause of the boat capsizing." he added.
It is worth mentioning that boat accidents are common in this region of Congo. Earlier, in December of the previous year, a boat capsized while on its way to Inongo city, near Mai-Ndombe.
