Türkiye's 90th-minute stunner shatters USA in five-goal thriller
Türkiye broke American hearts with a 90th-minute winner to defeat the United States 3-2 in a pulsating 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage clash that defied every statistical logic from first whistle to last.
The USA dominated virtually every metric — 53 per cent possession, 19 shots to Türkiye's ten, nine corners to two — and still lost, undone by a Turkish side of ice-cold efficiency that converted three of their ten attempts while their opponents, for all their dominance, could manage only two from nineteen.
The match was a rollercoaster from the third minute, when the USA drew first blood to the delight of a raucous Dallas crowd. Türkiye responded with characteristic ruthlessness, levelling in the 10th and taking the lead in the 31st to go into half-time 2-1 ahead.
The USA hit back four minutes into the second half to restore parity and then threw everything forward in search of a winner — rotating through five substitutions, winning corner after corner, pressing with mounting desperation. The offside flag caught them five times as the clock ran down.
Türkiye held their shape, absorbed the pressure and waited. Then, in the 90th minute, they struck.
The winning goal silenced Dallas instantly. Ugurcan Çakır, who made four crucial saves throughout, was immense in goal. Arda Güler and Kenan Yıldız were unplayable in transition. Hakan Çalhanoğlu, introduced late from the bench, steadied the midfield when it mattered most.
For the USA, the night was a sobering lesson in the difference between domination and victory. For Türkiye, it was confirmation that they are genuine contenders — a team with the nerve, the talent and the finishing touch to hurt anyone at this tournament.
