Trossard brace puts Belgium in control against New Zealand
Leandro Trossard struck twice as Belgium took firm control of their crucial FIFA World Cup Group G encounter against New Zealand, moving a step closer to securing a place in the Round of 32.
Belgium dominated from the opening whistle, controlling possession and creating a series of attacking opportunities. Despite missing several early chances, the breakthrough finally came when Leandro Trossard capitalised on a scramble inside the penalty area following a corner to give the Red Devils a deserved lead.
The European side continued to dictate proceedings and doubled their advantage just before halftime. Trossard was once again in the right place at the right time, finishing off a well-worked attacking move to register his second goal of the match and hand Belgium a commanding 2-0 lead.
New Zealand attempted to respond after falling two goals behind, but struggled to break through Belgium's organised defence and disciplined midfield. The Oceania side has found few clear-cut opportunities as Belgium maintained control of the contest.
As it stands, the result significantly strengthens Belgium's chances of progressing to the World Cup knockout stage, while New Zealand faces an uphill battle and will need an immediate response to keep their qualification hopes alive.
At the time of writing, Belgium lead New Zealand 2-0.
