Trump announces 3-week extension of Israel–Lebanon ceasefire
US President Donald Trump has announced a three-week extension of the ongoing ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, aiming to ease tensions in the Middle East.
The announcement came following a meeting at the White House with representatives from both sides on Thursday (April 23).
Briefing reporters, Trump described the talks as “very positive,” adding that both parties agreed to maintain the ceasefire. “No shooting—just a ceasefire. We’ll see where it leads,” he said.
In a post on his social platform Truth Social, Trump noted that the United States would work with Lebanon to help it safeguard against threats from Hezbollah.
The conflict escalated after a joint U.S.–Israeli operation in Iran in late February, which triggered Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon. The ensuing 45-day offensive reportedly left around 3,000 people dead. A 10-day ceasefire, brokered by the United States, took effect on April 17 and was due to expire on April 27.
With the new extension, the truce will now remain in place for an additional three weeks, offering a temporary respite in a highly volatile region.
The White House meeting was also attended by Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, among other officials.
