President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will blockade the Strait of Hormuz after peace talks in Pakistan collapsed on Sunday, April 12. US media outlet CNBC reported the information.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, "Effective immediately, the US Navy will begin the process of blockading all ships attempting to enter or exit the Strait of Hormuz. The blockade will commence soon, and other countries will also join in. Iran will not be allowed to profit from this illegal extortion."

This announcement has dashed hopes that the war could end within the coming days following the Islamabad talks. The decision could deepen the global economic crisis that has emerged since Iran restricted passage through the strait.

It is noteworthy that approximately one-fifth of the world's total oil supply passes through this strait.

Trump further wrote, "Iran is profiting economically by policing the strait while the rest of the world suffers—this blockade is to stop that. Eventually we will reach a point where everyone can enter and exit freely—but Iran is not allowing that, only saying there might be a mine somewhere, which no one knows about except them. This is global extortion, and the leaders of nations, especially the US president, will never be victims of extortion."
