US President Donald Trump has announced a major initiative, “Project Freedom,” to assist in the safe movement of commercial vessels stranded in the Strait of Hormuz amid an Iranian blockade of the strategically vital waterway.

He made the announcement in a post on his Truth Social account on Sunday (May 3).

Trump said the operation will begin on Monday (May 4), aiming to ensure safe passage for ships trapped in the narrow shipping lane, adding that the project is designed to help commercial vessels transit the Strait of Hormuz safely, with the US Navy expected to provide escort and protection.

“The aim is to assist ships stuck in the Strait of Hormuz and ensure the safe passage of innocent and neutral crews,” Trump wrote, adding that several countries had requested US assistance due to disruptions linked to ongoing regional tensions.

He described the initiative as a humanitarian effort, citing reports of shortages of food and essential supplies on vessels stranded for days.

Trump warned that any interference with the operation would be met with a “strong response,” without giving further details.

The Strait of Hormuz, a 167-kilometre-long strategic waterway, is one of the world’s most important maritime routes, with nearly one-fifth of global oil and gas shipments passing through it.

Tensions escalated after Iran imposed a blockade on the strait following the outbreak of conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel on February 28, leaving dozens of commercial vessels stranded in the Gulf region.
