Trump backs Cuomo to prevent Mamdani win

US President Donald Trump has urged voters to support former Governor Andrew Cuomo, an independent candidate, in the New York City mayoral election to prevent leftist candidate Zohran Mamdani from winning.

Trump warned that if Mamdani is elected, federal funding for New York would be halted.

Despite being a Republican, Trump expressed his support for Cuomo, saying, “If I must choose between a bad Democrat and a communist, I’ll take the bad Democrat.”

On social media, Trump wrote, “You must vote for Cuomo, because Mamdani is not fit for the job.”

In an interview with CBS, Trump added that if Mamdani were elected, New York would be in a state “worse than de Blasio’s era.”

Polls, however, show Mamdani leading over Cuomo. After winning the Democratic primary, Mamdani is now contesting in the main election.

Identifying himself as a “democratic socialist,” Mamdani stated that New York should be “a city where every resident’s dignity is upheld.”

Cuomo, on the other hand, claims he is the only candidate capable of handling the pressure from the Trump administration.
