U.S. President Donald Trump has called for an immediate end to the ongoing violence in Gaza, as images of devastation continue to emerge from the besieged Palestinian territory, White House Press Secretary Carolyn Leavitt confirmed the president's stance during a press briefing on Tuesday (July 1), reports Al Jazeera.

"The horrific images of war coming from Gaza and Israel are heartbreaking. President Trump does not want to see these anymore—he wants to save lives," Leavitt said.

The White House stated that Washington remains in constant communication with Israeli officials in an effort to bring an end to the conflict. "The United States attaches the highest priority to ending the war in Gaza," the press secretary added.

Tensions remain high ahead of a scheduled meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Trump at the White House on Monday. The Israeli leader, facing international condemnation and accusations of war crimes, has been widely criticized even within Israel, with many citizens blaming his hardline stance for blocking a ceasefire with Hamas and delaying the release of hostages.

Ron Dermer, Israel's Minister of Strategic Affairs and a close Netanyahu ally, is also in Washington holding talks with U.S. officials about the deteriorating situation in both Gaza and Iran.

The latest escalation between Israel and Hamas has dragged on for nearly two and a half years since the outbreak of war on October 7, 2023. According to official figures, at least 56,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza during this period, as the humanitarian crisis continues to worsen.
