Trump cancels India visit
U.S. President Donald Trump has canceled his planned visit to India for the upcoming Quad summit, according to a report by The New York Times.
The cancellation comes amid growing tensions between the United States and India in recent months.
Trump had reportedly informed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a phone call on June 17 that he would attend the summit, but later reversed his decision. Neither U.S. nor Indian officials have issued an official statement on the matter.
The New York Times analysis cites diplomatic friction as a key factor behind the decision. One point of contention was Trump’s renewed offer to mediate in the brief India-Pakistan conflict in May, which India firmly rejected. The issue reportedly caused further strain during the June 17 call.
In addition, the U.S. recently imposed a 50% tariff on Indian goods, effective last Thursday, adding to trade tensions between the two countries.
A planned meeting between Trump and Modi at the G7 summit in Canada was also canceled earlier due to Trump’s early departure.
The Quad summit, which brings together the U.S., India, Japan, and Australia, was scheduled to be hosted in India later this year. Trump’s absence raises questions about the level of U.S. engagement in the forum amid shifting diplomatic dynamics.
