Trump claims moon belongs to US, posts ‘The Moon Is Ours’

US President Donald Trump has claimed that the Moon belongs to the United States, posting an image of the Moon on his Truth Social account with the words “The Moon Is Ours” superimposed on it alongside an American flag.

The post came minutes after Trump shared AI-generated images of new black uniforms for the US Space Force. He described the uniforms as “space gray, midnight black, silver gray and satin black,” featuring various insignia on the shoulders and collars, sleeve patches and a belt.

Trump’s Moon claim and the new Space Force uniforms drew mixed reactions online, with several users comparing the designs to the uniforms of the Galactic Empire in the Star Wars franchise. Others joked about extending the alleged US claim to Mars and even the Sun.

Trump’s claim, however, conflicts with the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, which has been signed by more than 100 countries, including the United States. The treaty prohibits states from claiming sovereignty or ownership over the Moon or other celestial bodies through occupation, use or any other means.

The treaty establishes that outer space, including the Moon and other celestial bodies, is not subject to national appropriation.
