Trump cuts G7 trip short due to rising Iran-Israel tensions
US President Donald Trump is leaving the G7 Summit in Canada ahead of schedule, citing escalating tensions between Iran and Israel in the Middle East. The decision was confirmed by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on Tuesday, June 17.
“In light of the current situation in the Middle East, the President will return to Washington a day before the summit concludes,” Leavitt stated. “While the summit has seen substantial progress, the unfolding developments in the region demand the President’s immediate attention.”
Trump is expected to depart Canada following a dinner with other world leaders on Tuesday night.
Prior to the announcement, Trump posted a message on the social media platform Truth Social, urging Iran to rejoin the nuclear agreement with the United States. He also advised civilians in Tehran to evacuate swiftly, sparking speculation over possible U.S. military involvement in a potential Iran-Israel conflict.
The President's abrupt return and strong rhetoric have raised concerns that the U.S. could become directly involved in a new phase of the long-simmering tensions in the region.
