US President Donald Trump has extended the ceasefire with Iran indefinitely, hours before it was due to expire.

In a statement posted on social media Tuesday (April 21), Trump said the decision came following a request from Pakistan, which is mediating peace talks.

Trump said no attacks will be carried out until Iran submits a “comprehensive proposal” and negotiations reach a conclusion.

While the ceasefire remains in place, the US naval blockade on Iran will continue, trump said.

No immediate response has been issued by Iran or Israel.

The United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres has welcomed the United States’ decision to extend the ceasefire, according to a statement by UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric.

On the diplomatic front, Dujarric said the UN chief fully supports Pakistan’s mediation efforts aimed at ensuring the success of the next round of talks. He expressed hope that the initiative would help pave the way for a durable and effective resolution to the conflict.
