Trump imposes 100% tariff on Chinese imports
U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a 100% tariff on all imports from China, effective from next month.
The decision was revealed in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, on Friday (October 10).
Trump also said Washington is planning to impose export restrictions on software to China. Earlier, he accused Beijing of acting “extremely hostile” by tightening rare-energy exports and attempting to “hold the world hostage.”
The U.S. president further threatened to cancel his upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping but later clarified that the meeting has not yet been officially called off, though talks remain uncertain.
Following the announcement, U.S. stock markets fell sharply. Analysts warn the new tariffs could disrupt industries reliant on Chinese rare minerals, including automobiles and electronics.
The move marks an escalation in U.S.-China tensions that have intensified since May. Beijing has already tightened rare mineral exports and launched an antitrust probe against U.S. tech giant Qualcomm, while also introducing new port fees on ships operated by American companies.
Economists fear the renewed trade conflict could further strain global supply chains and slow industrial recovery in both nations.
