Trump made deal out of desperation: Mojtaba Khamenei
Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has said US President Donald Trump pushed a recent US–Iran agreement “out of desperation.”
In his first public reaction to the accord, Khamenei said Trump applied pressure to extract concessions from Tehran, but stressed that Iran would not accept Washington’s conditions. He added that any future direct talks with the United States would not amount to endorsing the US position.
Khamenei said he approved the agreement based on assurances from President Masoud Pezeshkian that Iran’s national interests and public rights would be protected.
The deal reportedly includes the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s pledge not to pursue nuclear weapons, and the creation of a $300 billion reconstruction and economic fund. It also sets a 60-day deadline for a final agreement, with scope for extension by mutual consent.
Conversely, US Vice President JD Vance has stated that Iran must destroy its enriched uranium stockpile and halt funding to regional armed groups, warning that failure to comply would exclude Tehran from sanctions relief or economic benefits.
Meanwhile, the United States has begun easing restrictions, with naval blockades on Iran lifted, though US warships remain deployed in the region as a precaution.
Separately, a planned US–Iran meeting in Geneva on Friday has been called off, according to the Swiss Foreign Ministry.
