US President Donald Trump has announced a temporary halt to the American military operation escorting commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz, just one day after its launch, as Washington seeks to revive stalled negotiations with Iran.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the decision followed requests from mediator Pakistan and other countries, adding that “great progress” had been made toward a “complete and final agreement” with Tehran.

The operation, dubbed “Project Freedom,” began on Monday to assist vessels navigating the strategic waterway, where tensions have escalated amid the ongoing Middle East conflict.

Trump said the initiative would be paused while diplomatic efforts continue.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said “offensive operations” under a separate campaign had concluded, describing recent actions as defensive in nature.

He added that Washington had achieved its core objectives and was still pursuing a negotiated settlement with Iran.
