Trump signals possible US move to control Iran Oil, Kharg Island
US President Donald Trump has indicated that the United States could seek control over Iran’s oil resources and potentially take over the strategically vital Kharg Island.
In an interview with the Financial Times on Sunday (March 29), Trump said gaining control of Iran’s oil would be his “preferred option,” while indicating that Washington is weighing multiple strategies.
“Maybe we take control of Kharg Island, maybe we don’t—we have many options,” he said.
Trump compared the approach to past US policy toward Venezuela, suggesting that long-term control of energy resources is under consideration.
He also claimed that seizing Kharg Island would not be difficult for the United States and said American forces might need to remain there for a period if required.
Kharg Island, located in the Persian Gulf, is Iran’s main oil export terminal, handling nearly 90 percent of the country’s crude oil and liquefied gas exports, making it critical to Tehran’s economy.
Analysts warn that any move targeting the island could have significant repercussions for global energy markets and further escalate regional tensions.
