US President Donald Trump on Sunday (Janaury 11) warned that Washington could take military action against Iran as nationwide anti-government protests have left at least 538 dead.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said Iran had “crossed the line” and that the United States was monitoring the situation closely, with the military keeping watch.

He added that several “very tough options” were under consideration, and decisions would be made in due course.

Iran responded that any US attack would be met with retaliation against Israel and American bases in the Middle East.

Clashes between security forces and protesters have intensified, with most casualties reportedly demonstrators. Internet shutdowns have limited independent verification.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian acknowledged citizens’ right to protest but vowed not to allow rioters to destabilise society.

Trump has repeatedly voiced support for protesters in recent days, urging Iranian authorities to refrain from using force and saying the United States is prepared to assist demonstrators.

The unrest began on December 28, triggered by inflation and economic hardship, is Iran’s largest anti-government movement since 2022.
