Trump signs limited AI security executive order
US President Donald Trump has signed a short and refined executive order on artificial intelligence and cyber security. The order, signed on Tuesday, June 2, calls for the creation of a framework to evaluate various AI models before they are released to the public.
According to tech news platform Engadget, the order tasks the Office of the National Cyber Director with developing a new process to ensure the US government can quickly share information with relevant parties if AI systems detect security flaws.
The information will be shared with operators of critical infrastructure such as banks, electricity and water utilities, and hospitals, before any AI model is made publicly available.
The new order asks some AI companies to voluntarily submit their most powerful models for government review 30 days before public release. An earlier draft had proposed a 90-day review period, but senior tech industry figures had pushed to reduce the timeline to just 14 days before the announcement.
