Trump signs proclamation imposing $100,000 annual fee for H‑1B visas
U.S. President Donald Trump has signed a proclamation imposing a $100,000 annual fee on companies sponsoring H‑1B skilled worker visas, a sharp jump from the previous fee of around $215.
The move, part of a broader overhaul of immigration policy, includes a new “Gold Card” visa that grants permanent residency to individuals who invest $1 million in the United States, according to Ap News report.
Under the new rules, the fee is expected to take effect on September 21, 2025, and applies per H‑1B petition filed by employers. The proclamation is valid for one year, although it may be extended.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the change is intended to ensure only “truly high‑skilled” workers are sponsored and to reduce dependence on foreign labour.
Critics say the policy could severely disrupt the U.S. technology and research sectors, and that it could face legal challenges.
