Trump to attend World Cup final
US President Donald Trump will be in the stands to watch the World Cup final between Argentina and Spain on Sunday at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, the White House has confirmed.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the information at a press conference on Thursday, July 16. She said they are looking forward to the final, and the president is also eager to watch the match live. Leavitt said Trump's presence will mark the end of what she called the most watched, safest and most successful World Cup in US history.
Leavitt also said Trump will attend a FIFA reception at Trump Tower in New York on Friday before heading to New Jersey for the final. FIFA President Gianni Infantino had already announced last month that Trump would join him in presenting the trophy to the winning team's captain after the final.
When asked which team Trump would support, Leavitt said she was not sure but encouraged journalists to ask Trump directly, adding that she was sure he would give a fun answer.
The US, Canada and Mexico are co-hosting this World Cup. Trump had not attended any matches earlier, though he attended the FIFA Club World Cup final last year at the same stadium and presented the trophy to Chelsea.
