Trump to continue peace efforts despite Nobel snub: White House
The White House has criticised the Nobel Committee for not awarding the Peace Prize to US President Donald Trump.
On Friday, Venezuela’s opposition leader María Corina Machado was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The White House responded, saying the award prioritized politics over peace. “President Trump will continue efforts to make peace agreements, end wars, and save lives,” the statement said. “He has a humanitarian heart and a will capable of moving mountains. The Nobel Committee has shown they prioritized politics over peace.”
AFP reported that Machado’s press team released a video showing opposition leader Edmundo González Urutía congratulating her over the phone. In the video, the 58-year-old Machado expressed her astonishment. “I am shocked,” she said. González responded, “We are also surprised and delighted.” Machado added, “I can’t believe this.”
Currently in hiding due to threats from the Venezuelan government, Machado has been unable to speak publicly until now. The Nobel Committee recognized her for encouraging Venezuelans to claim their democratic rights and for leading a peaceful movement to transition the country from dictatorship to democracy.
