Trump to meet Putin in Alaska on Aug 15
U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15, reports Al Jazeera.
Trump confirmed the plans via a post on Truth Social on Friday (August 8), stating that the details of the meeting would be disclosed later.
The meeting will be the first between the two leaders since Trump’s previous remarks that he intended to meet Putin soon but had delayed the announcement to avoid overshadowing the peace agreement he brokered between Azerbaijan and Armenia earlier this week.
Trump had previously suggested that Russia and Ukraine could swap territories as part of a potential peace deal.
Trump emphasized that both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky were eager for peace, noting that Zelensky was working towards finalising an agreement. The US president also expressed confidence that Putin was committed to a peaceful resolution.
Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, recently visited Moscow for talks with Putin, marking his fifth trip to Russia this year. The visit occurred two days before Trump set a 10-day deadline for Russia and Ukraine to finalize a ceasefire agreement.
Putin’s top aide, Yuri Ushakov, described the talks as “useful and constructive.”
