US President Donald Trump is not satisfied with Iran's latest proposal to end the two-month war, as the plan fails to address Tehran's nuclear programme from the outset, a US official has said.

The Iranian proposal outlines a phased approach to resolving the conflict . It suggests setting aside discussions on the nuclear programme until after a ceasefire is achieved and disputes over shipping in the Gulf, particularly the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, are resolved.

Trump discussed the proposal with his top national security aides at the White House on Monday, April 27 . According to an official briefed on the meeting, "He doesn't love the proposal," specifically because it leaves out the nuclear issue.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that the proposal was discussed at the highest level but declined to provide details . "The president's red lines with respect to Iran have been made very, very clear, not only to the American public but also to them," she said.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical maritime route for global energy supplies, carrying about 20 percent of the world's oil . The US has maintained a naval blockade of Iranian ports, which Iran has condemned as "piracy".

Iran seeks phased approach
Under Iran's three-point proposal, a first step would require ending the US-Israeli war on Iran and providing guarantees against renewed hostilities . Then negotiators would resolve the naval blockade and the fate of the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran aims to reopen . Only then would talks address other issues, including the nuclear programme.

Iran has also indicated that it would be willing to suspend uranium enrichment for five years, followed by low-level enrichment for civilian use for another five years, while diluting its uranium stockpile under international monitoring.

US demands nuclear issue upfront
The United States has repeatedly insisted that Iran's nuclear activities are central to any agreement and cannot be delayed . Secretary of State Marco Rubio said, "We have to ensure that any deal that is made is one that definitively prevents them from sprinting towards a nuclear weapon at any point."

Trump has long maintained that Iran must not acquire nuclear weapons. The US is demanding that Iran halt its nuclear programme for a specified period and remove all of its stockpile of highly enriched uranium.

Diplomatic efforts stall
Hopes of reviving peace efforts have weakened after Trump scrapped a planned visit by his special envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner to Islamabad over the weekend .

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has since travelled to Pakistan, Oman and Russia, where he met President Vladimir Putin and received words of support from a longstanding ally.

Araghchi blamed Washington for the lack of progress, accusing the US of derailing negotiations with excessive demands. "The US approaches caused the previous round of negotiations, despite progress, to fail to reach its goals," he was quoted as saying .

Efforts to bridge gaps between the two sides continue through mediator Pakistan .
