Several close advisers to US President Donald Trump are urging him to explore ways to quick exit from the ongoing military conflict involving Iran, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.

The advisers fear a prolonged war could trigger a sharp rise in global oil prices and generate political backlash, prompting calls within the administration to secure an “honourable exit” rather than allow the conflict to drag on.

They believe the initial objectives of the military campaign against Iran have largely been achieved, and that Washington should now focus on a strategy to wind down the operation.

Earlier this week, Trump also signalled that plans were being considered to bring the military campaign to a swift conclusion.

However, a senior official told The Wall Street Journal that a rapid withdrawal may prove difficult if Tehran continues attacks across the Middle East or if Israel remains prepared to strike Iranian targets.

The official added that Trump may be reluctant to end the conflict until he believes a decisive victory has been secured.

The report also noted that the US president appeared somewhat surprised by Iran’s reluctance to accept conditions put forward by the United States and Israel, leaving uncertainty over how quickly the conflict could ultimately be brought to an end.
