Tsunami warning issued after 6.1-magnitude earthquake hits off Greece
A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the northern coast of Crete, Greece, on Thursday morning, prompting a tsunami warning from European seismic authorities.
The quake occurred at 8:49 a.m. local time (5:49 a.m. GMT), with its epicenter located 58 kilometers north-northeast of Elounda, at a depth of 69 kilometers, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) issued a regional tsunami warning and advised residents in Greece, Turkey, Italy, France, and Portugal to follow instructions from their local authorities.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or structural damage. However, emergency services across Crete have been placed on high alert as a precaution.
This earthquake comes just one week after a similar 6.1-magnitude tremor near the island of Kasos. Crete and its surrounding region are among the most seismically active areas in Europe.
