Turkey assures support for Bangladesh's candidature for UN presidency

Turkey will support Bangladesh's candidature for the presidency of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. Turkish Ambassador to Dhaka Ramis Sen conveyed this support during a meeting with State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Turkish Ambassador to Dhaka Ramis Sen met with State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed on Monday, March 9. During the meeting, Ambassador Ramis Sen congratulated the state minister on her recent appointment.

He reaffirmed Turkey's commitment to further deepening the longstanding friendship and partnership between the two countries. During the meeting, the state minister warmly welcomed the ambassador and emphasised the excellent bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Turkey, rooted in shared values, cultural harmony and deep civilisational ties.

The state minister sought Turkey's support for Bangladesh's candidature for the presidency of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly for the 2026-2027 term.

Ambassador Ramis Sen informed that the Republic of Turkey will extend its support to Bangladesh's candidature. The state minister welcomed the growing cultural and educational engagement between Bangladesh and Turkey and highlighted the popularity of Turkish culture in the country. She proposed establishing a full-fledged cultural institute in Bangladesh to further promote Turkish heritage.

The meeting discussed further strengthening bilateral cooperation in important sectors. Both sides expressed satisfaction at the positive momentum of bilateral trade and emphasised the shared goal of increasing trade volume between the two countries.

The state minister welcomed greater Turkish investment in Bangladesh and expressed readiness to facilitate such engagement. She also highlighted the growing defence cooperation between the two countries and emphasised the importance of continued collaboration in capacity building and defence industry cooperation.

The state minister expressed gratitude to the Turkish government for humanitarian assistance to forcibly displaced Rohingyas sheltered in Bangladesh and for consistently supporting Bangladesh in international forums. The state minister expressed hope that Turkey would play a vital role in the repatriation of Rohingyas to Myanmar.
