Two die of heart attacks in Argentina during World Cup final

Two people died of heart attacks in the capital Buenos Aires during the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, as Argentina suffered defeat to Spain. Another person is in critical condition in hospital.

The country's emergency medical service (SAME) confirmed the information. Local media TYC Sports reported that the deceased were aged 67 and 88.

According to emergency sources, at around 6:40pm local time on Sunday, the medical service received a report of a 67-year-old man suffering a heart attack at a residence on the corner of Sarandi and Adolfo Alsina streets in the Montserrat area. Paramedics administered CPR for an extended period but could not save him.

Earlier, at around 5:39pm, another 88-year-old man suffered similar symptoms. He was given CPR and rushed to Durand Hospital but died after over five hours of treatment.

The Buenos Aires Health Ministry said a 72-year-old man was admitted to hospital at 6:22pm during the match with severe chest pain and breathing difficulties. He remains in intensive care in a critical condition.

Meanwhile, after the match, large crowds gathered at Buenos Aires' historic Obelisk square, leading to disorder and injuries.

According to local media Infobae, a 47-year-old man fell from a height of about four metres at the intersection of Lavalle and 9 de Julio Avenue, breaking his left leg. Others suffered injuries to their faces, noses and other parts of the body from falls and fights.
