Two transport workers arrested for extortion, colleagues block highways
Transport workers blocked roads in Bogura demanding the release of two colleagues arrested on extortion charges. The blockade caused severe traffic congestion, leaving Eid-bound travellers stranded.
The blockade was held from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm on Wednesday, May 27, at the Charmatha and Thonthonia bus terminal areas. Workers blocked the Bogura-Naogaon regional highway and the Dhaka-Bogura highway.
The two arrested workers have been identified as Monir Hossain and Abdur Rahim. Highway police arrested them early Wednesday morning from the Matidali area of Bogura city on extortion charges.
Highway Police Superintendent Abu Torab Mohammad Samshuddin told Views Bangladesh that the arrestees were standing on the road extorting money from vehicles. They were detained and a case was filed. They were later produced before court. An investigation is ongoing.
