Two vessels carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) have arrived at the outer anchorage of Chattogram port as Bangladesh ramps up imports to meet rising energy demand and ease the ongoing gas shortage.

Port Secretary Syed Refayet Hamim said the vessels—DL Lily from Malaysia and Gas Courage from India—anchored late Saturday night. They are currently positioned at the Charlie and Bravo points, with unloading expected to begin soon via lighterage operations.

As part of the ongoing import schedule, an LNG carrier, Kongtong, from the United States is expected to arrive on Sunday, followed by another LPG vessel, Paul, from Malaysia on Monday.

Port authorities said two more LNG carriers—Maran Gas Hydra from Australia on April 15 and Lobito on April 18—are also scheduled to arrive.

Officials expect that the gradual unloading of these shipments will increase LPG supply and help reduce gas shortages in both industrial and household sectors.

The increased imports come amid global energy market volatility driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. In response, Bangladesh has been sourcing oil and gas from multiple countries to ensure supply stability.

Experts say the combined efforts of imports and domestic production will be key to maintaining power generation, supporting industrial activity, and strengthening overall energy security.
