Two-time Ballon d'Or winner legendary footballer Kevin Keegan passes away

Kevin Keegan, the former England captain, national team coach and two-time Ballon d'Or winner, is no more. He passed away at the age of 75 after a long battle with cancer.

His family and former club Newcastle United confirmed the death on Monday (July 20). News of Keegan's cancer diagnosis emerged earlier this year in January. Later, in June, doctors revealed he was suffering from stage-four cancer.

One of the finest forwards of his era, Keegan was known for his exceptional pace, indomitable fighting spirit and leadership qualities. Despite his small stature, fans affectionately called him 'Mighty Mouse'.

Keegan achieved remarkable success at Liverpool, winning three First Division (now Premier League) titles, an FA Cup, two UEFA Cups, and playing a crucial role in Liverpool's first European Cup triumph in 1977. He later joined German club Hamburg, winning the Bundesliga title in 1979. During this period, he won the Ballon d'Or in consecutive years (1978 and 1979), cementing his status as Europe's best footballer.

Keegan earned 63 caps for England, scoring 21 goals and captaining the side 31 times. He also found success as a coach. In 1992, he took charge of Newcastle United and led the club back to England's top flight. His attacking and entertaining brand of football won him widespread acclaim. He later served as England head coach from 1999 to 2000 and also managed Fulham and Manchester City.

The football world is mourning the loss of Kevin Keegan, whose contributions as both player and coach will be remembered for generations.
