UAE declares Eid prayers will be held only in mosques
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced that this year’s Eid al-Fitr prayers will be held exclusively in mosques, with no gatherings in open fields or traditional Eidgahs.
In a statement issued Wednesday (March 18), the General Authority of Islamic Affairs, Endowments and Zakat said the decision applies across all seven emirates. The measure aims to ensure the safety of worshippers and maintain orderly conduct during the prayers.
Traditionally, large-scale Eid prayers are conducted in open grounds or Eidgahs, but authorities said special circumstances this year necessitate the change. All mosques have been prepared to accommodate worshippers, with guidance and instructions provided through official media channels and government platforms.
While the decision has drawn mixed reactions from residents and expatriates, many have welcomed it as a precautionary safety measure. Officials have urged the public to refrain from assembling outdoors for Eid prayers.
Eid prayers will be conducted at the designated time in mosques nationwide following the sighting of the Shawwal moon at the end of Ramadan.
