UK bans social media for children
Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced a ban on the use of social media for children under the age of 16 in the UK. Starmer followed the steps of several other European countries, including Australia, to take this decision.
Starmer said at a press conference that the decision was taken to increase the safety of children online and reduce the influence of big technology companies on Monday. It could bring about a big change.
Starmer also said that it will change the way parents talk to each other and the expectations of children. It will give children a safer and happier childhood. They will be ensured more time, freedom and opportunities to grow.
The British Prime Minister said that in addition to TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram, the government will take action against some other platforms. Especially against gaming and livestreaming services, which allow children to communicate with strangers.
