The United Kingdom (UK) has advised its citizens to avoid all non-essential travel to Bangladesh, citing heightened risks of political violence and possible attacks by extremist groups in the run-up to the country’s national election.

The advisory was issued on Thursday (January 29) by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

It warned that British nationals who travel to Bangladesh against official advice may find their travel insurance invalid.

According to the FCDO, the security situation could deteriorate during the election period, with risks including political unrest, targeted attacks on political rallies and polling centres, and incidents of indiscriminate violence.

The advisory noted that Bangladesh is scheduled to hold its national election on February 12, while election campaigning began on January 22.

The UK government has urged its citizens in Bangladesh to remain vigilant, closely monitor local developments, follow instructions from local authorities and avoid large gatherings, demonstrations and politically sensitive locations. Travellers have also been advised to prepare contingency plans in case of disruptions.

Additionally, the FCDO has advised against all but essential travel to the three districts of the Chattogram Hill Tracts, citing regular reports of violence and criminal activity, particularly in remote areas. It said consular assistance is severely limited in areas where travel is discouraged.

British nationals have been further advised to avoid areas with a heavy police or security presence and to keep movements to a minimum unless travel is strictly necessary.
