The United Kingdom will recognize a Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly in September unless Israel takes concrete steps to end the ongoing violence in Gaza, Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced Tuesday.

Starmer stressed the UK’s commitment to a “safe and secure Israel alongside a viable and sovereign Palestinian state,” warning that the two-state solution is “now under threat.” He said the recognition would serve as a contribution to peace efforts, but only if Israel fails to improve the situation in Gaza.

The Prime Minister called on Israel to agree to a ceasefire, allow UN aid to resume, and halt any plans for annexations in the West Bank. He also reiterated the UK’s firm stance against Hamas, demanding the militant group release hostages, disarm, and renounce governance of Gaza.

With fears mounting of a humanitarian disaster, Starmer urged that at least 500 aid trucks enter Gaza daily and emphasized the need for a long-term settlement to end the crisis.

The UK supports ongoing mediation by the US, Egypt, and Qatar aimed at securing a sustainable ceasefire and broader peace plan.

Hamas is designated a terrorist organization by the UK, the US, the EU, and Israel, complicating any future governance role in a recognized Palestinian state.
