Ukraine has proposed resuming peace talks with Russia, taking a diplomatic step forward after discussions were suspended last month.

This information was reported by Qatar-based news outlet Al Jazeera on Sunday, July 20.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced in a video message on Saturday that the newly appointed head of the National Security and Defense Council, Rustem Umerov, has already extended a proposal for talks to his Russian counterpart.

Zelensky said, “Everything necessary must be done to achieve a ceasefire. It’s time for Russia to make a decision—there’s no longer any room to hide.”

He further emphasized, “A high-level meeting is essential to ensure peace. A leadership-level dialogue is crucial for establishing lasting peace.” At the same time, he reiterated his willingness to engage in direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

As of now, Russia has not issued any official response to the proposal.

According to Al Jazeera, former Defense Minister Rustem Umerov was recently appointed as the head of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, and he has been tasked with pushing forward the peace negotiations.
