Russia has launched a major attack targeting Ukraine's energy infrastructure, in one of the largest assaults on the country's power system in almost four years of war, officials said.

President Volodymyr Zelensky, in a Telegram message on Tuesday, stated that Russian forces fired at least 450 explosive-laden drones and 70 missiles of various ranges at power generation facilities in five regions on Monday.

The strike is believed to be a reaction to the visit of NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg to Kyiv earlier in the day to reaffirm Western support for Ukraine.

Private Ukrainian energy company DTEK called it the largest attack on the energy system this year, claiming 10 of its workers were injured in the Russian barrage.

The assault came as a meeting of Russian, Ukrainian and US representatives in Abu Dhabi, aimed at exploring prospects for ending the war, was in its final stages.

Zelensky accused Russia of seeking to spread misery and panic among civilians, noting temperatures in Ukraine are currently around minus 16 degrees Celsius, often dropping to near minus 20 at night.
