The United Nations has urged authorities and stakeholders to ensure that voters—particularly women—can participate in the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election and referendum in a safe, inclusive and intimidation-free environment.

In a statement issued on Wednesday (February 11), the UN office in Bangladesh said participation in elections is a fundamental democratic right. It emphasised the importance of safeguarding the rights of women and girls, including women with disabilities, those from minority communities, gender-diverse individuals, and others who may face discrimination or gender-based violence.

The UN noted concerns raised by women’s organisations and civil society over incidents of violence and harassment targeting women candidates and voters, especially in online spaces. Reports of cyberbullying, disinformation, deepfake content, coordinated harassment and the misuse of artificial intelligence to produce manipulated or sexually explicit material have heightened risks for women political leaders, activists, journalists and human rights defenders, it said.

The statement said the UN continues to support efforts to promote women’s meaningful participation and leadership, including cooperation with the Bangladesh Election Commission. It stressed the need to ensure that all voters and candidates can engage in the electoral process without fear of intimidation, discrimination, online abuse or reprisals.

Calling on all stakeholders—particularly political leaders, parties and their supporters—the UN said any form of harassment, violence or intimidation against women in the electoral process is unacceptable.

The organisation expressed hope that relevant authorities will take necessary measures to uphold security, rule of law and the protection of fundamental rights throughout the electoral period, reaffirming its commitment to supporting these efforts.
