United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has praised the dedication and sacrifice of peacekeepers serving in some of the world’s most volatile conflict zones.

In his remarks, he urged the international community to strengthen support for peace operations through sustained political commitment and financial investment.

The tribute came as the United Nations marked International Day of UN Peacekeepers on May 29 under the theme, “Investing in Peace.”

More than 50,000 UN peacekeepers are currently deployed across conflict-affected regions worldwide, working to protect civilians, support humanitarian efforts and help maintain stability in fragile states.

Since the launch of UN peacekeeping operations in 1948, nearly 4,500 peacekeepers have lost their lives in the line of duty, including 59 personnel in the past year alone.

In a message marking the occasion, Guterres said peacekeepers continue to serve far from home in some of the world’s most dangerous environments, helping reduce tensions between conflicting parties, overseeing humanitarian assistance, supporting electoral processes and creating conditions for lasting political solutions.

Paying tribute to both current and former peacekeepers, the UN chief also honored those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving under the UN flag.

“No one should lose their life while working for peace,” Guterres said.

He described attacks on peacekeepers as a serious violation of international humanitarian law and called on member states to take stronger measures to ensure their safety and security.

Guterres further characterised UN peacekeeping as a proven and cost-effective tool for restoring stability and hope in conflict-ridden societies. He stressed that sustainable peace requires long-term political backing and reliable funding.

“Investing in peacekeeping means investing in a safer future,” he said. “We must continue supporting those who make peace possible.”

Bangladesh remains one of the leading contributors to UN peacekeeping missions. More than 4,000 Bangladeshi military and police personnel are currently serving in missions across the globe, playing a vital role in maintaining international peace and security.

The UN office in Bangladesh echoed the secretary-general’s message, noting that the work of peacekeepers underscores the urgent need for greater global investment in peace and stability.

According to the UN, peacekeepers regularly face significant security threats while carrying out their mandates. The organization has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening measures aimed at enhancing both their safety and operational effectiveness.

As part of the observance, Guterres is scheduled to lay a wreath at the Peacekeepers Memorial at UN Headquarters on June 5 and preside over a ceremony honoring fallen personnel with the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal. The event will also recognize outstanding contributions through the UN Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award and the UN Woman Police Officer of the Year Award.

A special briefing on peacekeeping operations is also expected to be delivered by Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations.
