UN, US express condolences over Dhaka earthquake casualties
The United Nations (UN) and the United States (US) have expressed condolences and solidarity following Friday’s earthquake in Dhaka that left at least 10 people dead and over 200 injured.
In a social media statement, the UN office in Bangladesh said it is closely monitoring the situation and conveyed deep sympathy to all affected.
The US Embassy in Dhaka issued a separate message expressing similar condolences.
A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck Dhaka and nearby districts at 10:38am on Friday. According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the epicentre was in Narsingdi’s Madhabdi, about 13km east of the Agargaon Met Office.
The US Geological Survey later reported the epicentre to be roughly 14km west-southwest of Narsingdi, at a depth of 10km.
