Law adviser Dr Asif Nazrul has said this is the most important election since Bangladesh gained independence, highlighting several unprecedented features of the process.

Speaking to journalists at the Madaripur Circuit House on Saturday afternoon after visiting several high-risk polling centres, he said the election includes voting through postal ballots and, for the first time, expatriate Bangladeshis will be able to exercise their voting rights. A referendum is also being held alongside the election.

Dr Nazrul said strengthening democracy and the rule of law in Bangladesh requires a decisive ‘yes’ vote. “We want Bangladesh’s democracy and rule of law to become stronger and more resilient. That is why voting ‘yes’ is essential,” he said.

He added that there is a strong public desire to vote, noting that the government has arranged a national election after 17 years. “We are fully committed to ensuring that the election is held in a free and fair manner. The district administration and the police are fully prepared,” he said.

Those present during the visit included Madaripur district and sessions court judge Roknuzzaman, deputy commissioner Md Jahangir Alam, superintendent of police Md Ehteshamul Haque, additional deputy commissioner general Md Al Noman and Sadar upazila nirbahi officer Wadia Shabab, among others.
