Uruguay fight back to deny Saudi Arabia in late equaliser drama
Uruguay produced a late response to salvage a 1–1 draw against Saudi Arabia in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H encounter, ending the Asian side’s hopes of a famous victory.
Saudi Arabia had stunned the two-time world champions in the 41st minute when Abdulla Al-Amri reacted quickest inside the box to convert from close range after Hassan Al-Tambakti’s header was spilled by goalkeeper Fernando Muslera following a corner.
The Saudi side carried their 1–0 lead into half-time after a disciplined defensive display that frustrated Uruguay’s attacking line.
After the break, Uruguay increased the tempo significantly, with Federico Valverde and Darwin Núñez leading sustained pressure in search of an equaliser. Saudi Arabia’s organised back line and compact defensive shape initially held firm despite wave after wave of attacks.
However, the breakthrough eventually arrived late in the match as Uruguay found the equaliser after prolonged pressure, restoring parity at 1–1 and shifting momentum in the closing stages.
The result denies Saudi Arabia another signature World Cup upset, having famously beaten Argentina in 2022, while Uruguay avoid an opening defeat but are left frustrated after failing to convert their dominance into a win.
