US Ambassador Brent Christensen has paid a courtesy call on Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman. The meeting took place at the Foreign Ministry on Monday morning, February 23. The US ambassador also met with State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam.
During the meeting, the ambassador discussed the forthcoming visit of US Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs Paul Kapur, scheduled for early March. Kapur is expected to visit Dhaka between March 6 and 9.
Both sides reviewed key areas of cooperation including trade, investment, defence and security, development partnership, migration and people-to-people exchanges.
The Rohingya issue was also discussed during the meeting. The Foreign Minister appreciated continued US humanitarian assistance and sought sustained political support for the safe and sustainable repatriation of the displaced Rohingya population to Myanmar.
Both sides expressed optimism that Bangladesh-US relations will reach new heights through increased cooperation in all sectors in the coming years.
Notably, in October last year, Indian-born US security expert and professor Dr S Paul Kapur was confirmed by the Senate as Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs, succeeding Donald Lu.
