US delegation discards Chinese gifts over spying and security concerns
A US delegation has reportedly thrown away all gifts received from China over fears of espionage and security risks, sparking widespread international discussion.
According to several international media reports, US President Donald Trump and members of his delegation discarded various gifts given by Chinese officials before boarding their plane after the Beijing visit. The items reportedly included burner phones, identification cards, badges, press invitations and commemorative souvenirs.
Reports said the materials were not allowed on board under instructions from US security agencies and the Secret Service. Officials cited concerns over possible surveillance, tracking devices and cyber security threats.
Sources said all China-origin items were strictly separated and disposed of before boarding Air Force One to eliminate any potential security risks.
Emily Goodin, a White House correspondent for the New York Post, said no Chinese-origin items were permitted on the aircraft for security reasons. The policy was reportedly enforced strictly by White House security staff and the Secret Service.
The incident has renewed debate over White House security protocols. Experts say long-running tensions between the United States and China over technology, espionage and cyber security have played a major role in such decisions.
